Is having fun really a sin?

I remember back in high school, I was an avid gamer playing violent games like Grand Theft Auto. I used to listen to a lot of gangster hip hop that contained profanity. My mother was always hitting me with that religion. It seems like everything I do for fun is a sin, according to her.
