Image processing project?

I am in final year of my B.TECH and i have chosen image processing as my final year projetc subject. I have thought of making image detection, finger print detection or object detection using it. The software i am going to work oN is MATLAB. Could you please suggest me some links or books from where i can study about this and get to start. Also suggest some other things which i can make using it.
